Sassy & Ben . Vancouver Family Photographer.

It's always fun to return to families homes and photograph them several years later. The last time I photographed Beth's family, Ben was still in preschool and Sassy was just in Kindergarten. Now they are both school age and it's so fun to see how kids grow and change in just a few years. We did a half day session starting early in the morning - I think Ben may have been the only one awake when I arrived! The plan was to have breakfast at home and then head to Deep Cove for a family Kayak. I have to give HUGE thanks to Tara of Tara Lily Photography for offering to be my Kayak chauffeur for the day.. I'm not too sure how I would have managed otherwise! Oh, and there are entirely way too many kayak images.. but it was such a gorgeous day, how could I not!

Charley & Owen . Vancouver Family Photographer

I've been photographing this family since Charley was in Mom's tummy. And Owen was my first birth session I ever photographed (and subsequently became hooked on documenting births!). Over the years we've become good friends, so it is always such a pleasure to take their photos.  I hope you enjoy this little glimpse into their life as much as I enjoyed photographing it.

family, newborns

Klara . Vancouver Newborn Photographer

I love watching new moms and dads with their babies. The look in their eyes that is the look of a new love they've never even come close to feeling before, how they unconsciously stroke their skin over and over trying to memorize every little bit, how little fingers and little toes are now a road map to the heart.

I photographed Klara's newborn session when she was just 5 days new to this world. She was such a sweetheart and this was such an enjoyable session to photograph. And big brother Bruce the dog - although not too sure yet about this new little baby, I'm sure they will be the best of buds in the years to come!  I also just realized I haven't blogged moms maternity photos yet and since they are some of my favorites I've sho,t I just might do that coming up.
But for now, Klara's newborn images -

I love when I get to take photos of families as their little ones grow. I can not believe Charley is already 1 and it has been a year since I took her newborn photos! For her 1 year session, we met at third beach in Stanley Park and had some fun in the trails and on the beach. I love that she was so into eating the sand.. because really what better way to capture a 1 year old than sand eating at the beach! And I love even more that mom and dad were cool with just letting her have fun with it! Such a great session! Some of my favorites from our evening together -

family

This year I've really been trying to push 'documentary' style sessions with the families I work with. Basically having the family choose the location and activity that they all enjoy doing together - a particular park, a beach day, even the morning routine of making pancakes and playing around at home (pajamas and all!) Whatever it is, it has to mean something to the family. What ends up happening is capturing real memories and images of happy families just being themselves rather than having to pose and smile for the camera for several hours.  And then families can really look back on these images and remember what their life was really like and how their kids personalities really were and how much they all really loved each other. Capturing that for families is what makes my heart so happy and I've been loving these sessions so much this year. This was one such session - back when we had some snow in Vancouver and Sophie was just a few months old. This family often spends Sunday mornings walking down to Granville Island for breakfast, coffees and to just enjoy the quiet stillness of the island before the busyness later in the day. So that's what we did. I met them at home as they were getting ready for the morning and headed down to the island with them. A few of my favorites from our morning together -

It's been a while since I've one a preview blog post for a family.. it  just means I had a really hard time deciding on a favorite to put up on my facebook page. So here you have it - the first of two families I spent the weekend photographing (the 2nd being a 5 day newborn that will also get her own blog post preview tomorrow). Krishen, you are one awesome little dude and I had so much fun hanging out with your family for the morning. So many more to come in a few weeks!
